Donald Trump Has Huge Credibility Problem With His ‘Football Has Gone Soft’ Comments, And Its Name Is Tom Brady

Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Reno on Sunday, and if sagebrush and pickup trucks could vote, he'd have the state wrapped up already. But they can't, and so he had to rev up his base in The Biggest Little City.
Much of his message was focused on Saturday's Wild Card Playoff game between the Bengals and Steelers. Throwing flags for violent hits to the head? That's what's preventing America from becoming great again, said Trump.
“So I’m watching a game yesterday,” said Trump. “What used to be considered a great tackle, a violent head-on [tackle], a violent – if that was done by Dick Butkus, they’d say he’s the greatest player. If that were done by Lawrence Taylor – it was done by Lawrence Taylor and Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke, right? Ray Nitschke — you used to see these tackles and it was incredible to watch, right?
“Now they tackle. ‘Oh, head-on-head collision, 15 yards.’ The whole game is all screwed up ... Football has become soft. Football has become soft. Now, I’ll be criticized for that. They’ll say, ‘Oh, isn’t that terrible.’ But football has become soft like our country has become soft."
But he had a caveat.
"It’s boring -- although I love Tom Brady,” said Trump. “I gotta tell you. I do love Tom. He’s a great guy. But it’s different. But it’s become soft and our country has become soft.”
Trump and Brady are BFF sleepover buddies, as you know.
So the NFL has become soft, and it's making our country soft. But not Tom Brady. The way he plays is OK. It's perfectly fine that if anyone touches Brady, or gets close enough to graze his jersey, that player is penalized for roughing.
The entire new era of rules to protect the quarterback were started and based on protecting Tom Brady.
So Trump's Brady quote invalidates his earlier NFL is soft quote. That's minus-10 yards, still first down. Next play:
“It’s become weak and you know what? It’s going to affect the NFL,” said Trump. “I don’t even watch it as much anymore. It’s going to affect the NFL. I don’t watch it. The referees, they want to all throw flags so their wives see them at home. ‘Oh, there’s my husband.’ It’s true. ‘He just broke up -- he just gave a 15-yard penalty on one of the most beautiful tackles made this year.’ Right?”
Oh, where to start? Officials are scrutinized and graded after every performance, especially in the playoffs -- and if they're not penalizing the plays that their superiors are telling them to penalize, then they won't last long.
As for Trump not watching the games, I'm sure that Roger Goodell is quite traumatized over this. The NFL pulled in more than $9 billion in revenue in 2014, and it will be more this season.
And, the NFL is boring? Does Trump know that Vegas runs Nevada, and that gambling runs Vegas? Without gambling on NFL games, there is no Nevada -- it's just sand and wild horses. Might want to rethink that one, Pasty Pete.
