Everything Old Is New Again: 49ers, Mike Shanahan ‘Closing In On Deal’
January 13 / Rick Chandler / SportsGrid
I can't recall a time in NFL history when so many long-bearded coaches want to get back into the game. Three are interested in the 49ers: Mike Holmgren (age 67), Tom Coughlin (69) and Mike Shanahan (63) all had, or in the case of Holmgren, wanted interviews, for a combined age of 199.
For a minute I thought that the Niners were going to do something trademark stupid like hiring Coughlin, or the relatively young Chip Kelly. But it's looking like they may go with Shanahanm and that's a smart move.
ESPN is reporting that Shanahan and the 49ers “are closing in on a decision”, and NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport is also saying that Shanahan “has reentered the picture."
Shanahan is no stranger to the 49ers, as he was the team’s offensive coordinator from 1992 to 1994, in between his stints with the Raiders and Broncos. That connection to the organization and his ability to discipline are two reasons why the 49ers are interested in Shanahan, a team source told Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole.
Shanahan is 170-138 record over 20 seasons in the NFL, with the Raiders, Broncos (two Super Bowl wins) and Redskins.
