ESPN Gets Rid Of Hank Williams Jr., The Singing Monday Night Football Cowboy

  • Dan Fogarty

ESPN will no longer be requiring the services of Hank Williams, Jr., or his rowdy friends. The company just released a statement saying the country music performer, who found himself in hot water after he made controversial remarks about President Obama, will no longer be singing the opening theme song to Monday Night Football.

ESPN’s full statement:

“We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams, Jr. We appreciate his contributions over the past years.  The success of Monday Night Football has always been about the games and that will continue.”‬

Regardless of Williams’ political views, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” has been a part of pop culture for over 20 years. It will be weird seeing a Monday night game without it.

UPDATE: Oh, and this just in: Williams has released a statement of his own. He told the Associated Press:

“I have made MY decision. … Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE.”

So there’s that.
