HARD KNOCKS: DeAndre Hopkins Hits Route So Hard He Breaks DeAngelo Hall
HBO's "Hard Knocks" debuted tonight and it did not disappoint. Perhaps the best sequence of the whole episode though was the hardcore beef that developed between DeAngelo Hall and DeAndre Hopkins during a Washington and Houston joint training camp session.
Veteran cornerback Hall started with some trash talking to try to intimidate the young wide receiver. Hopkins was not impressed and they jawed back and forth. It turns out, as per usual with athlete conflicts, this one was meant to be resolved on the field. Spoiler alert: it didn't go well for Hall.
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, HARD KNOCKS.
That's the absolute worst case scenario for Hall but simultaneously one of the best 'eff you' ankle-breaking routes I have ever seen. You cannot puff your chest out and try to assert your dominance and then have that kind of embarrassment befall you. We all hate to see a player get injured obviously, but as far as television entertainment goes it doesn't get any better than that. The payoff for the viewer was so quick. We got some great banter back and forth and then boom; Hopkins runs the hardest route in the history of all training camp sessions and old man Hall just breaks.
Here's how Hall described the events to reporters after practice that day, according to Washington's team website.
“Just a route, man,” Hall told reporters after Thursday’s practice. “The receiver was running the route, had a real good break on it and I went to break on it and just got outside the framework of my body and just kind of slipped a little bit.”'
I will give DeAngelo credit where credit is due here. "I just got outside the framework of my body" is the most creative wording I've heard in any context in a very long time. Touche. That makes it sound infinitely less mortifying than "the wide receiver nearly broke both my legs without touching me." I can always appreciate some Grade A finessing of the facts. It's just too bad that finesse didn't extend to his coverage skills.
Lesson from the first episode of "Hard Knocks": Hopkins is a straight up business man on the field. So defensive backs beware. DeAndre won't start it, but he will for damn sure finish it.
