Here’s How The 2-10 Buccaneers Make The Playoffs With Just A 0.00000184 Percent Chance Of Doing So
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, currently sitting at the bottom of the NFC South with a 2-10 record, are a longshot to make the playoffs. Teams with "better" records like the Giants and Washington Footballers -- are already officially out, but because the Bucs play in such a terrible division, they're still technically in the playoff hunt, and could make it to the postseason with a 6-10 record.
Needless to say, we really want this to happen, if only because it's so ridiculous. (If you're a fan of good playoff football, you probably feel the opposite, though remember the literal shockwaves caused by the 7-9 Seahawks a few years back.)
Using this incredible chart from Sports Club Stats, we can see that the Bucs have a mere 0.00000184 percent chance of making the playoffs.
Here's how it would work:
-The Bucs win out, obviously, going 4-0 against the Lions, Panthers, Packers and Saints.
-The Saints, Falcons and Panthers all finish with a 5-10-1 record (or worse). Since the Panthers already have one tie, they'll need to beat the Saints and Falcons while losing to the Bucs and either losing to or tying the Browns.
-The Saints and Falcons would have to lose all their remaining games... except for their Week 16 matchup against each other, which they would need to tie.
Of course, the dream is very small and faint. We should probably just count the Bucs out altogether... but until that Week 16 game doesn't end in a tie (or the Bucs lose and/or any other NFC South team wins this week), we'll keep believing.
For the record, the Bucs do have a chance at making the playoffs, which of course makes them eligible to win the Super Bowl -- but their chances of beating all the other NFC playoff teams and final AFC contender is so small that the percentage is virtually zero. So they can make the playoffs, according to math... but they can't win it all. Sorry, Tampa Bay.
