Hyundai’s #BecauseFootball Trending Topic Got Weird And Depressing
On Sunday, Hyundai's #BecauseFootball was a sponsored trend on Twitter.
Sounds harmless enough. Except that I made the mistake of checking it out and realized that most of the people using that hashtag were very much anti-football, and the rest of the people were weirdos.
Why would the internet actually try to enjoy something, right?
Of course, the tweets that are critical of the NFL and football in general are almost all completely valid; which is sort of the depressing part. I guess we should be grateful for the lighthearted and/or weirdos to distract us from the sad realities of football that we rarely want to look at.
Let's shuffle through some of the more interesting #BecauseFootball tweets.
Hmm. I have a feeling that the use of football as a substitute boyfriend is the problem, not the solution.
Ugh. There is nothing that is not completely and utterly correct about that statement. I'll mull that over while I sit here watching NFL Sunday Ticket, being part of the problem.
Isn't football supposed to bring people together?
I wish he were wrong. Obviously this is hyperbole, as not everyone in the league is any of those things. But it is true about an unacceptable amount of NFL players.
There is a little humor in there! Although I can't help but feel like middle-aged men do have to avoid a mid-life crisis every time they try to get together with their buddies and enjoy a game.
Oh, a domestic violence tweet to lighten the mood. Awesome. What. The. Hell.
Not only is this person on point, but it happens at every level of education and in almost every state in the country. It's a systemic issue that truly is due in part to football and other sports.
Can someone bring me back to a less "real" place for a second?
Well that definitely took a turn away from somber....although I'm not sure she understands the hashtag. I'm not even sure she understands basic sentence structure.
My girl Mags must be a Philadelphia Eagles fan.
Okay, I just cracked myself up a little there and I'm starting to feel better. What else do you have for me, Twitter?
DAMN IT. I give up. Good luck enjoying Sunday Night Football.
