If We Were Eli Manning, We’re Not Sure How We’d Take This Defense From ESPN’s Jemele Hill
It's not easy being Eli Manning. You've got the New York spotlight to deal with (though he forced his way into that situation when he got drafted, so we can't feel bad about him for that one), and you've got the shadow of your all-time great older brother always looming. Someone in Eli's position has to be careful about what he says and does, lest something that probably isn't that big a deal blow up in his face.
Today, though, that sort of happened. Eli, in talking with Michael Kay, said he thinks of himself as an elite-level quarterback. Not a shock: we imagine most starting NFL quarterbacks view themselves that way. Then, Kay really put Eli on the spot, asking if he thinks he's on the Tom Brady level. After some hesitation (not quite showing the level of confidence the statement itself might suggest), Eli offered a half-hearted, "Yeah."
Reaction was swift - some of it positive, as you can see - and we took particular note of something said on ESPN's First Take, which is going Bayless-free this week. Michael Smith wondered what Eli was thinking with the comment, while Jemele Hill loved it. In the process of defending him, though, Hill said something that, were we Eli Manning, we might have more trouble coping with than any criticism:
Yes...that's a Kardashian reference. And it was meant to defend Eli. And it wasn't just any Kardashian comparison - it was a Khloe Kardashian comparison. It's worth pointing out that it wasn't made in a derogatory "Bosh Spice" sense - she was saying there are times he must feel like Khloe. But still - a Khloe Kardashian comparison (komparison? Komparison.) is a Khloe Kardashian komparison. Between that and telling an story about Smith once playing Madden instead of going on a date with her back when they first knew one another, Hill really brought the embarrassment factor today.
