Bubbly Jets Fans Mistakenly Cheer For Opposing Team’s Touchdown
For events involving people we don't know that have no tangible impact on our lives, we sure take our sports fandom seriously. Sure, there are plenty of casual fans out there...but they're reflexively looked down upon by the hardcore set. You know the hardcore set: they're at every game they can get to, cancel plans to watch the ones they can't make it to, break down every aspect of the team (stats, injuries) in between games, second guess players' and coaches' decisions, and just generally care really hard about what happens. They care so hard that even when games aren't going on, they'll obsess over the draft, free agency, or in the case of college sports, recruiting. It's a strange endeavor, but a consuming one.
And that's why hardcore fans generally don't much care for the less-hardcore set...the ones who might be upset with a loss, but get over it pretty quickly, or maybe the ones who aren't familiar with everyone on the team, even key players. They haven't made that same kind of investment. And when fans dressed up in team gear are caught on television cameras cheering when something good happens for the other team?
Yeah, a lot of people weren't too happy with that one. We talked about the preseason being a time to work out the kinks for more than just the players - we didn't imagine fans would be in that category too.
Of course, this might have been more than a kink to work out: those young ladies were dancing for too long for it to have been some brief accident where they quickly corrected themselves. Maybe they weren't thinking and took their cues from the Texans fans that appeared to surround them, maybe they just don't really care about the Jets: either way, they didn't maintain the look of hardcore fans, and for anyone who knows them and happened to catch this, it'll take them a while to live it down.
