Las Vegas Raiders? Mark Davis Heading To Sin City Friday To Meet With Backers
Mark Davis isn't the first guy to tell his wife that he's going to Las Vegas to scout out a spot to move his NFL team. When I do it, it never works.
But Davis has an advantage -- a leaked memo from UNLV president Len Jessup said that the Raiders people will be there on Friday to check out potential stadium sites. And ESPN is reporting that Davis will be there, and meet with Las Vegas Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson. The Sands Corp. announced today that it would help build a $1 billion domed stadium on 42 acres across from McCarren Interntional Airport.
Adelson is also the guy recently revealed to be the new owner of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
"In typical Raider fashion," Davis said with a laugh over the phone from the Bay Area, "I can neither confirm nor deny."
Las Vegas Review-Journal:
"We are moving forward with the stadium concept with or without an NFL team," Sands Senior Vice President Andy Abboud said Thursday. "We see a lot more opportunities — conference championships, bowl games, NFL exhibition football, boxing, soccer, neutral site games, and music festivals. There is an entire segment out there."
UNLV bought the lot, and has said that it's interested in moving out of Sam Boyd Stadium to a spot closer to campus.
In the past two years the Raiders have been linked to Sacramento, San Antonio, Los Angeles and now Las Vegas. Since Oakland seems unwilling to negotiate for a new stadium there (for reasons not totally unwarranted), well, someone has to get the Raiders. Why not Vegas?
The smart money, however, is on this not happening.
Raiders to Las Vegas is a fun story, but so many obstacles and NFL position make it seem like a waste of time.
