A-LISTING: Inside Mike Shanahan’s Insane, Custom-Built $22 Million Mansion
It really pays to be a three-time Super Bowl winning NFL coach. Don't believe me? Just check out the Redfin listing for Mike Shanahan's $22 million home in Englewood, Colorado.
That's right, the man best known for coaching John Elway and the Broncos to back-to-back titles in the late 90's has put his six bedroom, 13 bath, 32,000 square-foot estate up for sale. And if you're also someone in professional sports that has more money than you know what to do with, this house could be yours.
Spoiler alert: IT HAS A BOWLING ALLEY IN IT.
And you better believe that the Shanahan's have spent more than a couple family game nights in that bad boy, because this house was custom-designed for Shanahan and his wife Peggy. The Denver Post's write-up on the property describes the palatial home as a "small piece of Versailles tucked into the landscape of the swank Cherry Hills Village."
Sounds...modest. Please, tell me more.
"Outfitted with 11 fireplaces, the luxury home features an expansive weight room, a racquetball court, a golf simulator, a two-lane bowling alley and a wet bar. Outdoor amenities include patios, a balcony, a wine terrace, a hot tub and spa, a pool, fountains, a sprinkler system and rooftop solar panels. The attached seven-car garage is equipped with a lift for storage." -Denver Post
Oh, is that all?
The general ambiance of the property is over-the-top luxury, exuding an air of old-money pretentiousness. Every room looks like it was decorated by the Downton Abbey set designers. Fresh and modern, this mansion is not. Still it's hard to deny that the home possesses some pretty envy-worthy features; like the beautifully manicured grounds and an incredible wine cellar.
Buyers should beware, though. Unless Donald Trump is our next president, the taxes on the luxurious home will cost about double the average American income. Redfin lists the home as having a 30-year mortgage at $91,576 per month, with taxes totaling over $100k per year.
Of course the listing also details the rest of the home’s envious assets and amenities that I still haven’t mentioned, and once you take a look you'll realize that these are the kinds of things only a very rich person would ever even consider needing anyway.
Here are a few more highlights of the Shanahan property:
– Master Suite
It features an antique fireplace from Europe. In case you were wondering.
– Family Kitchen
– Professional Kitchen
For the professional chef, of course. You can't have your gourmet chef cooking in a regular kitchen.
– Guest Suites
They are all replicas from Four Seasons guest rooms across the country. I can't deal.
– Guest Kitchen
It's between the two lower level guest suites. In a house like this, I assume there's also a guest chef. But perhaps I'm being presumptuous.
– 7-Car Garage
– Gathering Room
This is purely just to welcome people into their home and hand out the brochures and maps, so that visitors don't get lost. (I'm guessing. But that has to actually be a thing, right?)
– Wine Grotto
– Patio Wine Terrace
Please be aware that the wine grotto and the patio wine terrace are not the same as the wine cellar. They are just expanded spaces for entertaining guests who are enjoying the wine. Try to keep up...
– Music Room
– Hearth Room
"For entertaining happy guests in sumptuous style." I have to day, it does look pretty cozy.
– Private Den/Study
"I have many leather-bound books and my [estate] smells of rich mahogany!"
– Grand Family Room
– Poker Room
– Golf Simulator
– Raquetball Court
– Workout Room
– Guest Cottage
The 2,000 square-foot "cottage" features a living room, rec room, two bedrooms, four bathrooms and it's own pool. That way guests are really never actually near the people that are hosting them! #brilliant
– Serenity Garden
– Terrace With Fire Pit
– Iron Gazebo
The gazebo is highlighted by spouting fountains, and the whole scene really is very beautiful. It's definitely one of the few spots on the property that doesn't feel like it's meant exclusively for 18th century royalty. As a commoner, I appreciate that.
Clearly you should do yourself a favor and check out all the grandeur of the former Shanahan Manor in photographic and video form. You can see all of the highlights from the home’s listing below as well as view the full gallery here. It features a video tour of the entire property that will have you feeling like you're planning a visit to Disney World.
