Julio Jones WR, Falcons: grade 2 turf toe
After missing the last two games because of a toe sprain, it looks like Jones will be ready to suit up in Week 16. Injuries to the big toe are tough on wide receivers because it makes pushing off and accelerating painful. This is something he played through for much of the season, but he re-aggravated it in Week 13, and it wasn’t worth playing through it and possibly making it worse, and possibly ending his season. Jones is a risky start this week, but he’s one of the best in the game, so it will be tough to leave him on the bench if active.
A.J. Green WR, Bengals: hamstring strain
Green thought his season was over when he was diagnosed with a small tear to his hamstring, but after missing the last four games, he is expected to suit up on Saturday against the Texans. He hasn’t reached the optimal recovery time of seven weeks yet, but he’s getting close, so for that reason he’s a cautious start this week.
Matt Forte RB, Jets: meniscus tear & nerve damage in shoulder
Matt Forte has been banged up all season. Last week, we learned that his knee injury is actually a meniscus tear, something he will likely need offseason surgery on, and now he also has nerve damage to his shoulder. He played through the knee injury, but this shoulder injury could sideline him for the final two games of the season, especially with nothing on the line for the Jets.
Donte Moncrief WR, Colts: hamstring strain
Moncrief missed last week because he re-aggravated a hamstring strain that he picked up on Thanksgiving. While it didn’t ever sound too serious, it’s always concerning when a hamstring is re-injured. He will play on Saturday, but it would not be surprising if hamstring problems pop up again.
Jordan Reed TE, Redskins: AC sprain
Reed returned two weeks ago, but his shoulder injury has clearly limited his ability to perform on the field. Despite missing practice on Wednesday, the Redskins plan to play him against the Bears. He’s a very risky fantasy start until he proves he’s healthy.
Adrian Peterson RB, Vikings: groin strain and torn meniscus
Peterson made a very quick return from surgery to repair a torn meniscus and got in just three practices before suiting up for Week 15, so it isn’t surprising that he is now listed with a groin injury. Even if his knee felt great and was healthy, his body needed more time to get ready to play in a real game. AP didn’t practice on Wednesday and there’s a good chance he won’t suit up for the Vikings’ next game. it’s not worth the long-term risk.
Cam Newton QB, Panthers: shoulder injury
Heading into his Week 15 game, Newton’s shoulder was clearly bothering him. He was seen favoring it before kickoff and it didn’t look like he would be very successful. He somehow gutted through the pain and put up solid numbers. He was limited on Wednesday, and I see the Panthers managing his reps throughout the rest of the week so he can be ready to go on Monday night.
