NBC Sports Awkwardly Trolls Patriots Fans In ‘Blame Everybody’ Parody Video
Oh, how cute: NBCSports.com is trying to be funny and cutting edge.
"Most fans would just shake hands and say nice game. But in Boston, we have a different way of dealing with a loss. BLAME EVERYBODY ..."
So begins the NBCSports.com parody video "Blame Everybody", an attempt to troll Patriots fans that's somewhat amusing but mostly five-years-behind-the-times fail.
So the premise is that two Patriots fans lament their team's loss to the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game by blaming the NFL, Deflategate, the altitude in Denver and even the Illuminati in a parody rap video. Because, explains the video, that's what Patriots fans do.
I know NBCSports.com -- I worked there -- and let me assure you that creativity is not their strength. In fact until now it's been non-existent. The typical reader at the digital arm of the NBC Sports family wants to know the exact nature of Tony Romo's new bonus clauses, and Hunter Pence's OBP, and nothing else. The site not a go-to destination for laughter: NBC Sports' featured personality is Mike Florio, who is a terrific reporter but has all the snark and whimsy of a Swiffer Wet Jet.
That's why this lunge at comedy via a parody video is so surprising -- it's as if John Kerry suddenly interrupted a speech on Libya to launch into a song from Hamilton.
Well, not surprisingly, NBC contracted this one out. The Kicker, which is the sports comedy division of the comedy site Above Average, is producing five of these spots in what NBC Sports is calling "Sports ... The Musical?" The first effort is something that would have been funny six or seven years ago, when these types of faux-rap efforts were still fresh. But now? And to just pile on to the thousands of voices ripping the Patriots is just kinda sad.
But I can just see the NBC Universal execs in Stamford reviewing this one, making notes like "needs a woman" and "let's not make this too ethnic." Bottom line: the people who run NBC Sports have too many sticks jammed up their poopers to make something like this work.
And so here is our official rating of "Blame Everybody":
