NFL Free Agency Roundup: Kevin Kolb, Roy Williams, And Vince Young
When you define "winning" free agency as acquiring the biggest names on the market, the New England Patriots were the unquestioned winners on Thursday. After acquiring troubled-but-still-good defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth, the Pats acquired sometimes-flashier-than-necessary (but still good) wide receiver Chad Ochocinco. And although those are the moves that are still being buzzed about this morning, plenty happened elsewhere in NFL free agency late last night and early this morning.
- Someone finally got Kevin Kolb! The Arizona Cardinals confirmed that the NFL is a quarterback-starved league when they traded him to the Eagles for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round draft pick, and then signed him to a $63 million contract. This, despite the fact that he has only seven career starts. But don't worry, Cardinals fans, I'm sure your team's history of good luck with young quarterbacks will ensure that this gamble pays off.
- Someone finally got... Roy Williams! When we last saw Williams, he was being dumped by his hot girlfriend for a college baseball player. Now, he's being signed by the Chicago Bears to be Jay Cutler's "go-to-guy." Watching the Chicago media trying to talk themselves into thinking this was a good move (He caught 82 passes under Mike Martz in 2006! Martz will rejuvenate his career!) is quite a sight indeed.
- Elsewhere: The Texans grabbed Johnathan Joseph, who many saw as the second-best cornerback on the market behind Nnamdi Asomugha... The Titans have released Vince Young, and he appears close to signing with the Eagles... The Saints assured that they'll still be fun to play with in Madden when they replaced the departed Reggie Bush with Darren Sproles.... David Akers has left Philly after 12 seasons and signed with the 49ers... Brad Smith, the Swiss Army Knife of skill position players, has signed with the Bills... the Jets have contacted Randy Moss... the Nnamdi Asomugha bidding war is heating up: the Jets still appear to be the frontrunners, but Asomugha is as also entertaining offers from the 49ers, the Buccaneers, and the Cowboys.
