This Video Comparing Michele Bachmann To Tim Tebow Couldn’t Save Her Campaign
When Rick Perry compared himself to Tim Tebow at a presidential debate last month, we thought Perry might have come across a fine idea. An analogy that made some sense, given the Broncos were still riding high off their comeback-laden win streak, combined with Tebow, a name sure to resonate with Perry's supporters (and the people he wants to make his supporters)? His opponents might be kicking themselves that they hadn't gone to that well yet themselves.
Which might have been the case - for the ones who actually hadn't. Today, though, a video reportedly posted by No Compromise, a pro-Michele Bachmann political action committee (PAC), blew up a bit. According to its Youtube page, it was originally posted on December 11 - before Perry made his Tebow comparison. The spot compares Bachmann to...well, you can figure it out. Here it is:
Overall, the messages of Perry and the Bachmann people are pretty similar, i.e. "Just like you can never count Tim Tebow out, you can never count our candidate out." But the video makes some dubious points. One, we're not sure we've ever heard anyone say Tebow isn't smart enough to succeed. Can't make NFL throws? Not accurate enough? Sure. Too stupid? Haven't heard that one. And as far as calling Bachmann a candidate with "no baggage," this struck us as something pretty weighty to lug around.
And maybe the Tebow comparison isn't all that effective to begin with. After all, earlier today Bachmann announced she was leaving the presidential race after a disappointing finish at the Iowa caucus. And though he'll remain in the race, Perry didn't fare so well in Iowa, either.
Maybe invoking Tebow's name made so much sense that it was too predictable. Maybe voters simply weren't as taken with the Tebow strategy as we thought they'd be. Or maybe Bachmann (and to a lesser extent, Perry) just figured out what's been clear to anyone watching Tebow's Broncos the last few weeks - when you have severe limitations, either as a candidate or a quarterback, magical runs are tough to sustain for very long.
