Details From Last Night’s Candlestick Park Shooting Will Eat Away At Your Faith In Humanity
We try not to be too cynical around here. Skeptical when it's warranted, sure, but we like to think that in general, we maintain our faith in the human race, that everyone isn't just naturally awful, etc. Incidents like the one that took place last night outside Candlestick Park following the 49ers' 17-3 preseason win over the Raiders make us wonder if our thinking is right. The details:
A man wearing a shirt slamming the San Francisco 49ers was seriously wounded as gunfire erupted in the parking lot after the team's NFL preseason game, while another man sustained lesser injuries in an earlier shooting, police said.
Police Sgt. Frank Harrell said that in Saturday's attack the 24-year-old man, who was wearing a T-shirt referring to the 49ers with an obscenity, was shot two to four times in the stomach, according to reports in the Oakland Tribune and the San Francisco Chronicle. He drove his truck to a gate and stumbled to security, Harrell said.
Just...like...come on, people. An incident like this would be horrendous at any time, but a preseason game? Guess they really are just an excuse for fans to get rowdy. Seriously. Shooting other people. No matter what they're wearing (and it sounds like it was a real classy T-shirt), this is honestly just one of the lowest things you can do as a human being. We hope no one loses a life as a result of this insanity.
The shooting wasn't the only instance of fans getting into it at Niners-Raiders, either: in addition to the two (possibly, but not definitely, related) shootings, another fan was beaten unconscious in a restroom. Additionally, some videos of fans brawling in the stands are making the rounds. Here's one. Do not enjoy. Ugh.
