Ray Rice Allegedly Spat On Fiancee Before Punching Her
Just when you thought things couldn’t get worse for Ray Rice (something tells us we haven’t seen the bottom yet), security staffers told ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” that Rice spat in the face of fiancée Janay Palmer before hitting her.
The story from a current and former security staffer describe details that involved Rice spitting in Palmer’s face twice, once inside and once outside the elevator, which prompted her to start to retaliate – and ended with him smashing her in the face with a left jab.
One Punch, Tons of Trouble
It’s amazing how much bad news has come from one punch. Obviously, an argument escalated to this, but it all comes down to the one punch, one second of stupidity and rage.
Janay Palmer: Who knows why they fought, but Rice’s fiancée could wrongly blame herself for the maelstrom of attention and bad news at their doorstep. Here, she’s the victim of abuse, getting hit by a man that most men would have trouble taking a punch from, and now she’s also the victim of her husband’s stupidity, as they’re losing millions of dollars in salary and endorsements.
Baltimore Ravens: John Harbaugh and his team now have to deal with this story for the rest of the season – as we know more details are sure to come. The media is pouncing now, and more news like this will come out. Eventually, we’ll find out the NFL representative that did, in fact, watch the video, and we’ll have to go through all of this again. The Ravens’ locker is likely a dark place to visit these days, and it will be tough for them to rebound in 2014.
Roger Goodell: The NFL Commissioner is getting the worst press possibly in the history of the NFL for how he and the league has handled this. Would we be surprised to see a new commissioner by 2015?
The NFL: The shield has always had a pristine image, even though it has employed dozens of less-than-desirable players, including RB Lawrence Phillips, who dragged his ex-girlfriend down a flight of stairs. In reality, though, the shield seems like too much makeup on an aging star now. It marketed itself toward women in recent years, and now it’s shocked to see its fans reticent to give them a pass.
Ray Rice: He has lost everything, except his wife, family and whatever friends he has been able to keep. How long can their marriage last? Just like when a couple loses a child or there’s another tragedy in the family, they sometimes grow apart. Every day Janay wakes up, she looks at the man that gave everything to her – and then took it away. And for Rice, he’ll (hopefully) feel shame for the rest of his life for that one punch.
There are men and women that have done much worse than Rice, including the people handing down judgment from the NFL offices, the media and on Twitter. But they’re not public figures, fairly or unfairly.
Men like Mike Tyson have rebounded from news like this, as have many others. It can happen. I hope it does, and I hope Rice is able to help others not make the same mistakes he did. If that happens, then maybe this story has an amazingly unexpected happy ending after all.
