Remembering Denny Green: Pioneer, Personality, Great Football Coach
Unfortunately, Dennis Green most likely will be remembered for his classic post-game tirade following the 2006 Bears-Cardinals game, which his Arizona team lost after gagging up a 20-point lead. Green, in an unhinged, nutty rant, uttered the immortal lines "The Bears are who we thought they were!" and "If you want to crown 'em, crown 'em!" before smacking the microphone and storming out of the room.
Green was a passionate coach who often let his heart rule his brain, and it's no wonder. That heart was as big as a house. His real legacy is building technique and attitude and consistency in his players, and today those players are lining up to heap praise on their former coach. Green died today of cardiac failure at age 67.
Green last coached in 2011, for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League, but previously coached two NFL teams, among them some of the best Minnesota Vikings squads of the 1990s. And of course the Cardinals (2004-2006).
Green became head coach of the Vikings in an era when black head coaches were nearly non-existent -- he was only the third African-American head coach in the history of the league, and second since 1921. A Bill Walsh disciple who was weaned on the West Coast Offense as an assistant with the 49ers, Green coached 13 years in the NFL, 10 with the Vikings.
RIP Denny Green. I hope Randy Moss gets to eulogize him. https://t.co/aGlNu2TYKT

Last time I spoke to Denny Green he quoted Abe Lincoln: "Things may come to those who wait, but only things left by those who hustle"
