Rex Ryan Explains The Logic (Or Lack Thereof) Behind His New Tattoo
Never one to function outside of the media spotlight, Rex Ryan literally turned heads at Jets training camp yesterday, as those in attendance craned their necks to get a look at the coach's new tattoo, featured prominently on his right calf.
Today, Ryan explained the design, previously thought to be just a medley of arbitrary markings. Which it kind of is.
"It's a mountain, some waves and some sharks."
Appropriate, given that it's Shark Week and all, but apparently Ryan had already commissioned the tat a month ago, while on vacation in Hawaii.
"I've got a couple of tattoos before. I just felt like it. The guy that I went to had given me tattoos before and it's just something that I wanted to do."
Ryan downplayed the notion that the ink represented some kind of mid-life crisis move, and implied it was already a hit among his players.
"They think it's cool," Ryan said. "And I'm like, 'Yeah, it is.'"
The history of the tattoo was further examined in a video posted on the team's Facebook page, during which Ryan stated "A new 'tat' means believe in yourself, which I've got no problem doing."
That, or you believe in an incredibly high tolerance for pain.
