Ricky Williams Plays The Cultural Relativity Card In Defending Adrian Peterson
Barkley said it, Reggie Bush said it, and now Ricky Williams has said it: Beating your kids isn't inherently bad. Their reasoning? "Whuppings" are a culturally accepted practice in the black community.
Is "reassessing cultural norms" an accepted practice in the black community?
Williams -- who claims his mom beat him and he turned out "fine" -- found himself defending Adrian Peterson's decision to whip his child's testicles. "He hit him in his testicles," Jim Rome said. "You don't have a problem with that?"
"I don't," Williams replied.
"I think in the black community we spank our kids. But when you look at Ray, there’s no excuse for what he did."
So what if knocking out your wife was a accepted practice in a particular culture? (It was at one time.) Would that make it ok, too?
