RIP Cam Newton’s Dab 2015-2016
Earlier this week, a hacker into the official Twitter account of the NFL repeatedly declared the death of commissioner Roger Goodell, though it was later reported the 57-year-old commander-in-chief of the league was alive and well.
However, another death has struck the league....and this time it's for real.
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton, speaking on Charlotte radio station WFZN-AM, announced that he was retiring the "Dab", a popular touchdown celebration that became a polarizing national phenomenon. Newton scored 45 total touchdowns last season, en route to a 15-1 regular season record and an appearance in Super Bowl 50.
Taking questions mostly referring to his nationally recognized 2015-16 season, Newton, appearing the program "The Mac Attack" stated that he would "have to put (the dab) aside"
headed into the 2016-17 season. Newton first performed the move, whose origins remain disputed, in an October game against the Seahawks. It became a hot topic after a November visit to the Tennessee Titans, where Titans defenders took exception to Newton's over-the-top touchdown celebration, which involved a dab. The Titans weren't the only ones rocked from their safe spaces, as a female Titans fan later addressed an open letter to Newton, chastising him for performing his on-field antics in front of children.
While The Dab will sorely be missed, its elimination does bear some silver linings. For example, no longer will we have to hear talking heads debate The Dab, and also provide silly explanations for it. In addition, perhaps posing as a warning to the easily offended, Newton has promised that he will be coming up with something different, remarking that he "has until September to come up with something new". So have your pens ready, haters!!!
