Shawne Merriman Takes ‘Lights Out’ Nickname To Heart With Hollywood Club Overdose

Retired San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was reportedly rushed to a hospital on Sunday night after overdosing on an “unspecified combo of [alcohol and drugs]”, according to Andrew Blankstein of the Los Angeles Times. Merriman was partying at The Colony when he was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at 9:30 p.m. after reportedly coming close to passing out inside the club.

Blankstein broke the news on Twitter early this morning:

But don’t worry, because this isn’t your typical celebrity athlete club overdose story. It gets better. A quick look at Merriman’s Twitter account shows him tweeting just over four hours later, complaining that he lost his sunglasses and ruined a shirt.

He then posted this photograph of himself with rapper The Game at Greystone Manor, a popular, celebrity-frequented California nightclub. Now I’m no math genius like LeBron James, but it seems that he must have been at Greystone following his trip to the hospital, considering the fact they open at 10 p.m. Here’s a photo of Merriman with the G-Unit rapper, just hours of his reported overdose:

And what would we do without TMZ and their sleuth work? They caught Merriman on his way out of Greystone around 1 a.m., and he seems to be sober or close to it in the video. While the interviewer is horrific and asks Merriman questions about deodorant and football contracts, this video makes the story of Merriman’s alleged overdose, supposedly just three hours earlier, even more confusing.

Merriman confirmed to NFL Network reporter Akbar Gbajabiamila early this morning that he was on his way home from the hospital. Perhaps this is just a classic but extreme case of the good ‘ol boot-and-rally. For the uninitiated, that’s when someone drinks to the point that they throw up (the boot), and then recover and get back back to partying (the rally).

One thing is certain: even with his playing days behind him, Shawne “Lights Out” Merriman is doing his best to continue living up to his well-deserved nickname.
