Stephen A. Smith Destroys Jay Cutler: ‘One Of The Worst People To Be A Quarterback In The NFL… Ever’
It's trendy to hate on Jay Cutler nowadays. He went from a respectable, if injury-shortened, 2013 season (and a massive contract extension) to a nightmare year in 2014, which led to a complete turnover in Chicago and rumors of Cutler's departure all summer -- though it seems the team has decided to stick with him, if only because they own him an ass-ton of money.
So it's not like Stephen A. Smith went out on a limb today in his complete evisceration of Cutler as a quarterback, athlete and person. But a day after former Cutler teammate Brandon Marshall told "First Take" that he was the only person on the Bears to hold Cutler accountable (a relatively tame but notable put down), Smith was absolutely brutal in his assessment:
The most salient bit:
jay cutler is one of the worst people to be a quarterback in the nfl that i have ever seen. he's horrible. and it has nothing to do with his talent. in fact, it is because of his talent. that is what makes him even worse because all the requisite skills are there. there isn't a throw he can't make. his arm strength can rival anyone's in the nfl. he can make every throw, he is capable of winning. he has all the requisite skills and talents. his i.q. is not bad, okay.
the bottom line is that i have repeatedly stated he doesn't care. and when you are the quarterback of a team who has missed the playoffs in seven of the last eight years. when you are a quarterback in the nfl as a starter, you know, more than nine years in the league, eight to nine years in the league and you have one playoff victory on your resume but your talent says you are not a scrub, then you know what you are? you are a loser. you are a loser because you are not a scrub. if you are a scrub, you are a scrub. you can't play... you can only do what you can do. when you can play and when everyone is depending on you and you take the money and you still don't care, you are pathetic. you are a loser. that is what jay cutler is. that's right. i said it. he's horrible.
While mostly agreeing with Smith, Skip Bayless slightly defended Cutler, saying he's "not a winner" rather than "a loser." Then Smith went back in, saying Cutler only cares about money and that he's an embarrassment to the city of Chicago:
if this were a contract year i have no doubt jay cutler will perform because he is trying to get paid. if this were almost any other athlete we would sit there and talk about how they got their money and they tanked it, they wet the bed. but for some reason we are giving jay cutler a pass. he doesn't deserve the pass. i said he is a loser and i stand by it... the city of chicago is no longer hoodwinked by jay cutler. they know what they have. they know he is a loser. they know he is not committed. the only reason they tolerate him is because they are stuck with him because they know the chicago bears are cap strapped and have no choice but to keep him... if it wasn't for that you would see the city of chicago go up to soldier field and sit up there and carry jay cutler outside of the city limits their damn self. they can't stand him either. this dude is pathetic. i said it. it needs to be said. he is stealing money. he is embarrassing the city of chicago.
brandon marshall, god bless him for being honest enough to speak some semblance of the truth because there is a whole bunch of dudes, i'm telling you, i ain't asking you. stephen a. heard -- let me be clear, i have been told far worse than what brandon marshall said on television by various bears inside that locker room and i have been told it for the last two years and counting. they want him gone in the worst way. they know they are stuck with him. i feel sorry for his teammates for his sorry self because he is a loser
Damn, dude. Tell us how you really feel.
