Stephen A. Smith: Eagles Don’t Like Chip Kelly
The professional sports situation in Philadelphia has seen better days/months/years. Between the winless Sixers (nothing new), the hapless Flyers (worst record in the Eastern Conference) and the free-falling Phillies (worst record in baseball last season), Chip Kelly's 4-6 Eagles look like New England Patriots by comparison. The only problem is that they're worse than their record indicates, having been blown out at home by the better-than-their-record-indicates Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday afternoon. In reality, they're more like the New England Patriots practice squad.
Unlike the other four head coaches of the city's four major pro teams, however, Kelly is unanimously loathed. According to Stephen A. Smith, that includes some of his own players. Gulp.
"I'm not asking you, I'm telling you, there are a whole bunch of dudes in that locker room who do not like Chip Kelly. I'm going to leave it at that, Skip."
Whether this little anecdote is surprising or not, it certainly doesn't bode well for his future as an NFL head coach.
"I don't think Chip Kelly is back next year."
To make matters worse, an anonymous Eagles player called out DeMarco Murray for not giving 100% after, ya know, getting an absurdly big contract following a grueling 2014. Once again, the decision to swap LeSean McCoy for a 27-year-old who carried the ball 430 times over 18 games last season falls squarely on Kelly, whose delusions of grandeur trumped the most basic understanding of NFL running back psychology. You had to see this coming, bruh.
[Philly.com] “Well, when you see DeMarco sliding before getting hit, you tell me. Was that giving full effort?” said the teammate, according to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer. “You see that (expletive) and it makes you wonder.”
Watch for yourself. Does this make you wonder?
Whether he's being smart or quitting on a team that has lost the will to risk bodily harm for their embattled coach, this kind of in-house finger-pointing makes one thing crystal clear: the shit has officially hit the fan in the Eagles locker room. Expect more dissention heading into Thursday's game against the lowly Detroit Lions, where a bad loss could result in a city-wide riot.
