Sunday’s Packers-49ers Game At Lambeau Could Dip Below -51º Farenheit

The surface of Mars was measured to be around -20.2º fahrenheit the other day. The wind chill at Lambeau field may be 31º colder than that on Sunday night for the NFC Wild Card game. That’s not hyperbole — that’s one of the coldest temperatures on Earth right now.

And, apparently, in the Solar System as well.

[Smithsonian] According to the data from NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity, the average reported high temperature over the past month has been between -13 and -24 Fahrenheit at its location. This matches temperatures around the Twin Ports many mornings over the past month. Places like Embarass, International Falls, Tower, and the like have seen morning temperatures well below that, reaching near -50 many mornings over the past month, including -45 this morning.

Full disclosure, Curiosity is more or less in Mars’ tropical zone, so these are some of the warmest readings on the entire planet. Regardless, Sunday’s 4:30 PM match-up could dip below -20º F, with a windchill of over -50º!

In that kind of frigid weather, exposed skin freezes in five minutes. We’ll repeat that: At -50º F, exposed skin freezes in five minutes. Your average NFL playoff game lasts three hours or more. You do the math — that shit could get dangerous. And everyone playing in the game is aware of the risks (though they may not choose to think about it right now).

[Green Bay Press-Gazette] Anquan Boldin had little interest in discussing the forecast for Sunday’s NFC wild-card matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

“Don’t think about it,” said the San Francisco receiver when the topic was broached.

The previous record for coldest NFL game came in the 1982 AFC-title game between the Chargers and the Bengals (we’re guessing it was played in Cincinnati), where the wind chill coeffecient was calculated at -59º F. We gather that no one suffered frost bite in that one, so suffice it to say we won’t be seeing Aaron Rodgers stuffed into the belly of a dead Tauntaun anytime soon.
