The 2 TV Shows That Got Ryan Leaf Through Prison
Ryan Leaf's 32-month stint in a Montana prison for a string of drug and burglary charges following his infamously disappointing NFL career was a sobering experience, both literally and figuratively. Now that he's out, he spends his days counseling others who struggle with substance abuse at a Los Angeles clinic. If there is a better example of just how much drugs and alcohol can ruin, we're not aware of it.
Speaking with ESPN's Arash Markazi, the reformed addict spoke candidly about his three years as an inmate, and you might be surprised what he said inspired him to keep on keeping on.
"The Ellen Show," he said without hesitation. "It kept me going in there for a long time.
"My face would hurt from smiling and I would cry because of her heart and the good nature. When I needed that humanity lift, I went to her and that show for what she did for other people."
"Other [show] was Modern Family," he added. "It would make me feel again."
From second-overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft to grown man who clings to a dancing daytime TV talk show host for dear life. Wow. The full clip, below...
