The Packers Haven’t Won Since Mike Ditka Put On Their Sweater
Many people are asking, what did it take to get Mike Ditka into that Packers sweater? Seriously, there are a lot of Bears fans upset about this. Well, the answer's obvious: a big fat check from McDonald's. And that's understandable. In what other walk of life does someone hand you lots of cash just for changing into a green sweater for ten minutes?
Ditka's actual line from the commercial, on the other hand, is very sad:
"The chance to win free McDonald's fries for four Sundays in a row? I can take the pain."
Mike, haven't you already had at least one heart attack?
Anyway, there seems to be more to this than immediately meets the eye. Ditka may have cursed the Packers. Since he first put on that Packers sweater, Green Bay hasn't won a game.
Riding high at 5-0 and talking Super Bowl, the Packers rolled into Denver on Nov. 1 and promptly lost, 29-10. So was it just coincidence that Ditka had first put on the Packers sweater five days before, as part of the McDonald's "Game Time Gold peel-and-play game" promotion?
Green Bay followed that up with a 37-29 loss to the Panthers this past Sunday.
Kind of lost in the shuffle is that Dallas hasn't won since Jerry Rice put on a Cowboys jersey as part of the same McDonald's promotion. Of course, Dallas is on a six-game losing streak, so you can hardly blame McDonald's for that.
Anyway, here's the best way to break a curse: play the Lions. As the Packers do this Sunday.
