The Unitas Family Sure Is Pissed About Joe Flacco Pretending To Be Johnny Unitas For A Few Minutes
We were already a little skeptical about a movie called "Unitas We Stand," because, even as movie titles go, it makes no sense and is lame. But apparently we're not the only ones who aren't pumped for the Johnny Unitas biopic: a good chunk of the family is outraged that Joe Flacco, Super Bowl champion and not-actor, will take on the role (for just a few scenes, mind you) and they're letting the world know.
It's important to note that the film is a Joe Unitas project. Joe is Johnny's son from a second marriage, and the first marriage family, led by John Jr., is annoyed with the project in general and the casting of Flacco in particular.
On Joe and Tom Callahan, the author of Johnny U: The Life and Times of Johnny Unitas (emphasis ours):
"[Joe] is a turd... They're trying to do anything on the coattails of my father's name. It's like prostituting yourself. My father would have nothing to do with it. It makes me angry, but there's nothing I can do about it until they slip up. If they start selling some things with Johnny Unitas on it, then I have legal recourse."
On Flacco playing the final scenes of Unitas' life:
"If you want a quarterback, go with Peyton Manning. My father was just like that. This is a joke."
John Jr. isn't the only pissed off member of the Unitas family. His son, J.C., posted his thoughts on Facebook, including a sick burn that will totally endear his gripe with the Baltimore masses:
"If you want a real movie, hire a real actor... My grandfather and his legacy deserves only the best, and this is not it. Has Baltimore forgotten that Trent Dilfer also won a Super Bowl while playing for Baltimore?"
Invoking Trent Dilfer? That's a low blow, J.C.
Here's to hoping these half-siblings and aggravated grandsons can work through their issues and bring us a couple of minutes of Joe Flacco playing Johnny Unitas (because, again, he's not playing Unitas the whole movie -- just the final scenes, which ostensibly will be him playing football) that we can all mildly stomach before moving on with our lives.
