Todd Bowles Admits He Forgot To Tell Ryan Fitzpatrick He Was Being Benched
You know that feeling you get when you realize that everyone knew something embarrassing about you before you knew it? Yeah, that's the exact hand that New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was dealt on Monday when his head coach failed to mention that he was benching him until after the media was told.
After an embarrassing showing at home against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football, Todd Bowles decided that he was moving on from Fitzpatrick as the team's starting quarterback. Rather than letting him know right away though, he went straight to the podium and announced it to the world!
“I’d been meaning to talk to him and I got tied up with a few things,” Bowles explained, per Pro Football Talk.
Not cool, Todd. NOT COOL.
To his credit, Fitzpatrick - who took a fiery tone earlier in the season when he was unceremoniously benched - did not lose his cool when this information was relayed to him via the media's questions. That didn't go unnoticed by Bowles, who seemingly felt like an even bigger turd after Fitzpatrick was so cool about things.
“I probably could’ve and he tried to cover for me,” Bowles told the media on Tuesday. “Like I said, I had a lot on my mind and got some things off my chest, and it kind of went over the wrong way. I’ll talk to him tomorrow.”
At this point it's hard to tell whether Bowles is a bad head coach or not. Maybe he's just finally succumbed to the fact that barely-comedic mishaps and a constant, sweeping sadness are inescapable parts of being a New York Jet.
