Tom Brady’s Deflategate Appeal Could Come Down To His Friendship With Donald Trump?
I'm not a lawyer -- I have not enough college credits and too many morals. But Mike Florio of NBCSports.com's Pro Football Talk used to be one, and he used that experience today to make a wild claim. Florio, speaking on the Dan Patrick Show, said that Tom Brady's possible Deflategate appeal to the Supreme Court could hinge on Brady's friendship with Donald Trump.
Stay with me now. Brady had his four-game suspension by the NFL upheld on appeal today by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, leaving his only path to try and get the case heard by the Supreme Court. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would initially decide if the case should be heard. And as we know from recent events, she hates Trump. Brady has acknowledged his friendship with Trump, once saying that it would be "great if he were President."
Trump has made statements in support of Brady all through the Deflategate mess.
Florio thinks that this could play a role in whether Ginsburg accepts the case -- that a Supreme Court Justice would show bias in a decision because of an unrelated friendship with someone she doesn't like. That's not only a stretch, that's pretty irresponsible. Florio to Dan Patrick, via Business Insider:
"The key person in deciding that request would be Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is assigned to the cases arriving from the Second Circuit. She is the one who will decide whether or not Tom Brady's suspension will be put on hold while the Supreme Court decides whether or not to take up the case. So whether or not he plays Week 1, Sunday night, NBC, in Arizona, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is likely to be the person who decides that.
"Here's where it gets very interesting and very political. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, based on her background and her ideology, she would be naturally inclined, I think, to stay this. But there's a complication, and yes, it all leads back to Donald Trump. Tom Brady is a self-professed friend of Donald Trump, and earlier this week, justice Ginsburg just flat-out lambasted Trump, calling him a faker and all sorts of other things. Those political elements can work their way into cases where they shouldn't and I am very interested to see to what extent Brady's friendship with Trump actually hurts him in front of justice Ginsburg."
That's one huge helping of character assassination right there. It's just a cheap shot, and so unbecoming of someone who calls himself a journalist.
