WATCH: Roger Goodell Addresses Ray Rice Suspension, Won't Rule Him Out Of NFL; Contradicts TMZ Report
September 9 / Eric Goldschein / SportsGrid
Just one day after banning Ray Rice from the NFL indefinitely, CBS got an exclusive interview with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell that airs tonight at 6:30 ET on the CBS Evening News. The live stream is below.
CBS has already teased the interview, conducted by Norah O'Donnell (no relation to our Jake O'Donnell), by saying Goodell will not ban Rice permanently and will give him the opportunity to redeem himself. Goodell also contends that the league asked for, but did not receive, the "second tape," contradicting the TMZ report stating that the NFL never requested the video:
Norah O’Donnell: To be clear, did you know about a second tape?
Roger Goodell: Well, we had not seen any videotape of what occurred in the elevator. We assumed that there was a video. We asked for the video. We asked for anything that’s pertinent. But we were never granted that opportunity.
You can catch the live stream, embedded below.
(Strangely, CBS aired a few recorded takes of Bob Schieffer introducing O'Donnell, and in one of the runs Schieffer's phone went off. See if that happens for you -- it's a pretty cool behind-the-scenes look at a major network breaking a big story.)
UPDATE: CBS aired just a portion of Goodell's interview tonight, but he did say that "no one" in the NFL had seen the second video to his knowledge, and also doesn't believe his job is in jeopardy because of this scandal. BOLD WORDS. The full interview will air tomorrow on CBS This Morning.
