WATCH: Sony Releases 2nd Trailer for “Concussion”
This Christmas, a movie will be released in theaters that's likely going to upset some people. It's going to be up to the director and talented cast and crew to carefully get the story right and present a film that leads to a positive reception, no matter what certain naysayers have to say about.
Oh yeah, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is due out around that time too.
This holiday season will see the release of the controversial Concussion, the story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, who single handedly went up against the National Football League to release his groundbreaking discoveries on brain damage suffered by former players caused by head trauma incurred during years of playing football. Sony, who will release the film on December 25, unveiled the second trailer for the movie yesterday, and there's plenty to discuss.
Unlike the first teaser trailer, which was posted back in August and focuses mainly on the character of Omalu (Will Smith), this new trailer introduces us to actual players who are/were integral to the rise in concussion protocol, including the late Mike Webster (David Morse) and Dave Duerson (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), whose self inflicted deaths set in motion Omalu's research. As such, it introduces the NFL as more of an antagonist in the film, in contrast to the first trailer. We also get our first glimpse of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who will be played by Luke Wilson
This will be a very interesting film, and it'll be worth checking out its box office numbers. While it'll no doubt be somewhat hurt by the Star Wars factor, it'll be curious to see how many people check out the movie despite their loyalty to the NFL and its product. Despite the rise in injuries in the NFL, it remains the top rated program no matter when it plays, the latest evidence of its dominance personified in the form of Thursday Night Football, which has achieved high numbers despite prominent network television programming and low quality games.
Either way, the movie, which is based on the famous GQ expose Game Brain, could serve as a tipping point for the NFL in terms of player safety. While no doubt numerous innovations have been made in keeping the athletes safe on game day, there is always the lingering concern that they could always do more.
So this movie could be way, way more than a mere Will Smith Oscar shill.
