Why The McCourty Twins And Their Mom Are The Best NFL Family
There is an inordinate number of sibling sets playing in the NFL right now; many of which are very good. Eli and Peyton Manning. Michael and Martellus Bennett. Luke and Josh McCown. Chris and Kyle Long. Mike and Maurkice Pouncey. Vernon and Vontae Davis. They are all players doing extremely well for themselves in one of the most competitive professions on the planet.
But there is one NFL family that is just outdoing the rest: the McCourty twins and their mom, Phyllis Harrell.
One could imagine that there are far worse things in the world than having two sons playing in the National Football League, but for the mom of twin defensive backs Devin and Jason McCourty, it could be a challenge choosing which son to root for on game day.
Especially since her sons happen to be twins who haven't exacly had similar career trajectories.
Devin plays safety for the New England Patriots with whom he has played eleven playoff games including two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl win. Meanwhile, Jason has played cornerback for the Tennessee Titans since 2009 and has never seen the postseason.
Yet despite the disparity in the overall success of their careers on the field, they seem to be as close knit as any two brothers could be. And part of that is because of their dedication to their mother.
A piece by Jim Wyatt of The Tennesseean earlier this year details how Harrell sacrificed so that her boys could go to private school, raising them herself after their father died of a heart attack when they were three years old. It goes on to talk about how the boys promised one another as kids that they'd get scholarships to college to ease their mother's burden. They both went on to earn scholarships to play for Rutgers together.
"There's probably no one who's my bigger fan, and probably no one who's his bigger fan,' Devin said of Jason. "I think it's important in anything in life to have someone to watch your back and help you out along the way. There's nothing better than having a twin brother to help you do that."
They've done everything that they set out to do and more, and they are still the best of friends. They even share a Twitter account and adorably sign their names to their tweets to differentiate themselves.
Also impressive is the fact that they were both their teams' 2014 nominees for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which honors players volunteer and charity work as well as their play and leadership on the field; something that Harrell is unsurprisingly very proud of.
It's clear that Mama McCourty raised a pair of kind, talented, family-oriented sons who are intent on keeping familial bonds no matter where their success takes them. Which is why this thirty-second video from the boys and their mother for P&G at Walmart will definitely make you wish you could hang out at their house on game day.
I'm fairly sure that there is no cuter sports mom in America than Mama McCourty. And don't even get me started on the PERFECTION that is her dual McCourty jersey.
I'm just going to go ahead and say it. Phyllis is the Riley Curry of sports moms. She just wins.
