Zany Fantasy Week 17 From a Daily Fantasy Football Viewpoint
We’ve all been told to be afraid of Fantasy Week 17 because of the impending NFL Playoffs and teams out of the hunt looking toward next year.
But that’s for traditional Fantasy Football leagues, my friend!
These are the days of Daily Fantasy Football on sites like FanDuel, where Week 17 is actually one of the greatest weeks of the season!
For one, NFL playing time will be a little different this week, as eliminated teams double-down on their youth, looking toward 2016, and teams that have already clinched might play their stars for just a few series.
Secondly, there are no Thursday, Saturday or Monday night games this week, which means there will be 16 games on Sunday for the first time all season. That’s 32 NFL rosters to choose lineups from, which means there are going to be a ton of different lineup variations this weekend!
All of that variety is a great thing for DFS players hoping to bring home a win in a GPP tournament, as diverse lineups with big upside are rewarded more than ever. I wrote an article Wednesday for FanDuel Insider that ranks the top 30 quarterbacks according to their projected value, which should help you in your quest for a DFS crown.
2016 NFL Playoff Picture Affects Daily Fantasy
I went through the NFL Playoff picture for both the AFC and NFC to point out some teams that might alter their regular playing time divvied out to their stars and starters.
The Broncos, Cardinals, Panthers and Patriots have all pretty much locked up the first or second spots in their respective conferences (with a 77-percent probability or higher) and each team should get a bye and at least one home game in the playoffs.
Next up are the Bengals, Redskins and Texans, who are locked into their spots, for the most part (90-percent probability), and they’ll probably get home games in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
Looking at the seven teams I mentioned above, it’s very possible you’ll see starters rest in some of these games, so tread carefully when you place them in your DFS lineups.
However, when you look at the Chiefs, Colts, Jets, Packers, Steelers and Vikings, who are all fighting for positioning, as well as trying to lock in a playoff spot, then you know the starters are likely going to play every minute of these games. Then again, looking at the Vikings, they’ll have a good idea of where they are slotted by the time they take the field in Green Bay Sunday night.
Taking this one step further, we should also be conscious of which teams might play their youngsters in games of no consequence, as they look toward the future and their 2016 NFL roster.
For instance, the Saints at Falcons, Lions at Bears, Eagles at Giants and Rams at 49ers games are all matchups between teams that have no playoff hopes.
There are five teams with hopes of not having the worst record in the NFL, which brings with it a shot at a No. 1 overall draft pick. The 49ers, Browns, Chargers, Cowboys and Titans have three or four wins each, and the best chances at the top pick.
Proceed with caution in your Daily Fantasy Football lineups during Fantasy Week 17, but know that your chances of winning a GPP tournament on FanDuel might be better than ever!
