15 Years Ago Today, The Red Wings And Avalanche Tried To Kill Each Other
March 26 / Glenn Davis / SportsGrid
During the late 1990s, no rivalry in the NHL - and possibly in sports, period - ran hotter than the one between the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche. It was a perfect storm - they were both in the Western Conference and were good every year (they combined to win five of the seven Stanley Cups between 1996 and 2002), so they were battling one another for conference supremacy pretty regularly.
Also, they hated each other.
And that hatred became legendary 15 years ago today, when the two teams went at it in an all-out brawl in Detroit. There was already bad blood brewing after the Avalanche's Claude Lemieux hit the Red Wings' Kris Draper from behind the previous year, but this took things to another level. Any time you have the two goalies going at it - and any time you have the crowd as fired up as that one was - you know you've had a winning brawl. And judging by the Youtube comments for the video below, the hatred between the two sides is alive and well all this time later. It's a beautiful thing. Kind of.
