Did Calgary’s Dennis Wideman Wipe Out Ref Intentionally? He Says No, And We Agree
Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman knocked over linesman Don Henderson during the second period of Wednesday’s game versus the Nashville Predators -- and when we say "knocked over", we mean plowed into the glass like a scarecrow.
The majority of Twitter is calling for Wideman's summary execution -- howling for a severe penalty from the NHL. There was no call at the time.
The incident occurred seconds after Wideman took an awkward hit into the boards from Miikka Salomaki.
Wideman said following the game that the contact was "purely accidental," and I believe him. Here's video.

The Vine especially makes Wideman look bad, but that can be deceiving. If you look at the contact closely, you see that Wideman veered at the last split second, and put his arms in front of him in a defensive motion -- not an aggressive shove. He may have been concussed on the previous play, and a little hazy at the time.
Was he given a concussion test? I don't see how the NHL can suspend him without one. The whole thing just looks accidental to me.
But then I'm no hockey expert. I tried to take Canadian as a foreign language in high school. ESPN:
"I took a pretty good hit down in the corner and had some pretty good pain in my shoulder and neck," Wideman said. "I was just trying to get off the ice and kind of keeled over. At the last second, I looked up and saw [Henderson] and couldn't avoid it. I went up to Donnie and apologized to him on the ice.
"I didn't see him. I didn't know where to go and how to get out of the way. I've been around for a few years, and I think I've treated every official with the utmost respect, and I would never intentionally try to hit a linesman or a ref. It was completely unintentional, and I already apologized to him."
If you've ever been on skates, you know that it's not like walking -- a lot of times you have to plan ahead to avoid objects in your way. You can't brake like you can in basketball shoes.
Anyway, what do you think? Intentional? If so, what should punishment be?
