Heads Up! Other Sports Items Tossed in the Stands
I, for one, have never experienced the luxury of sitting courtside at a basketball game, but I assume it's pretty damn fun....that is until a projectile that has been in an athlete's mouth come hurling at you.
Such was the case during Thursday's Game 6 of the NBA Finals, when Steph Curry, extremely upset over a 6th foul call (somewhat understandably), tossed his mouth guard into the stands, hitting a group of Cavs fans sitting courtside. Steph, however, is a far from to toss an unwanted souvenir into the stands, as evidenced below. Guys, next time just stick to the free t-shirts will ya?
Brandon Jacobs's Helmet
Jacobs made his best football memories as a running back for the New York Giants, but for one game, he briefly became an ill-advised quarterback. During a 2010 visit to Indianapolis, a frustrated over a fumble Jacobs tossed his helmet off, landing 10 rows deep into the stands. Following the most passive-aggressive fight over a from-the-field souvenir in the history of football, Colts security obtained the helmet. Needless to say, Jacobs got an earful from Giants head coach Tom Coughlin over the incident.
Steven Stamkos's Stick
During an overtime thriller with the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Steven Stamkos had a brilliant one-timer opportunity to end it, but alas, his poor stick couldn't handle the pure velocity and speed of a Stamkos slapper. In pure frustration, Stamkos flung the remains of his destroyed stick into the stands. Only half of the stick made it into the seats, but all Stamkos was sent to the penalty box for a delay of game and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. In fact, Stamkos was ordered to go directly to jail, given a 10 minute misconduct. Boston would take the game in a shootout, with the Lightning missing their star shooter.
Henrik Lundqvist's Stick
In this video, Henrik Lundqvist becomes indirectly responsible for some good ol' fashioned New York City violence. Celebrating a shutout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, Lundqvist flung the stick responsible for the performance into the stands. Unfortunately, fans, who will kill each other for a t-shirt you can probably but for $5 at the souvenir stand, went completely insane over an object touched by "The King" himself. When no one could get along, the stick was wrenched away from the masses and given back to Henrik in the locker room.
Dick Motta's Basketball
Dick Motta was one of the many colorful personalities that was coaching in the 1960's and 70's. Motta coached several different over 35 years in the association, but is perhaps best known for an incident while coaching the Chicago Bulls in 1972. During a match with the Detroit Pistons at Cobo Hall, Motta, expressing frustration with that night's officiating, grabbed the abandoned basketball, and punted it deep into the stands. Most incredibly, Motta escaped punishment completely, as the refs never saw his infamous free kick. In fact, it was the PISTONS coach, Butch Van Breda Kolff, who was punished as he tore into officials for missing Motta's tryout for the NFL.
