Is This The Islanders’ New Alt?
When did the phrase "Hello Brooklyn" translate to "Goodbye Color"?
Twitter user @danbrYnk posted an image of a possible third jersey for Brooklyn's new hockey franchise, the New York Islanders, on Thursday. The team, who will move into Barclay's Center for the 2015-16 NHL season after over decades at Nassau Veterans' Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, has yet to comment, though they recently released promotional material indicating that a new alternate jersey will be unveiled on September 21, when the team is slated to open preseason play against the Philadelphia Flyers.
You'll notice the potential jersey, shown above, appears somewhat familiar. I'm sure I've seen it before, but I can't quite put my finger on it....
The Islanders have stated that there are no plans to change the team's name to "Brooklyn Islanders" or change the teams official colors of blue, white and orange. However, I can't say I'm a fan of this jersey. The Islanders' classic color scheme, which has remained fairly consistent throughout their history, contains literally no traces of black. While this trend has been going on for a long time now (Looking at you, Mets), it's a little weird to see the Islanders of all teams go with a black uni. Furthermore, the Islanders briefly toyed with a black third jersey a few years back, and it was almost universally hated.
In addition, this put the Islanders' snazzy current alternate in jeopardy. The Isles first wore as part of their Stadium Series game against the Rangers and made it a full time part of the set afterwards.
I will admit, there's one thing I like about the proposed new jersey is the four sleeve stripes, possibly made in reference to the team's four Stanley Cup victories. I find it very interesting when teams incorporate elements from their history onto their jersey sets, and the Isles have a done a nice job of indicating their four titles on past jersey sets. It's something more teams should do.
But overall, I'm not a fan of this potential new Islander look. Hopefully, this Nets-like alternate turns out to be a fake.
