You Need To Watch This Video Of Former NHL Star Ilya Kovalchuck Figure Skating
It's the Monday before Christmas, and I think we can all agree that absolutely no one wants to do anything this week. That's why I'm not making you wait until Thursday to watch the throwback video of former NHL star Ilya Kovalchuck that just resurfaced on the internet, courtesy of Reddit.
Kovalchuck is best known by American sports fans as the former NFL star who signed a 15-year, $100 million deal with the New Jersey Devils in 2010, only to bail out three years later to move back to Russia and play for the KHL. At the time, his historic NHL contract was second only to Alexander Ovechkin's in richest contracts in league history. (Ovechkin signed a 13-year, $124 million contract in 2008.)
During the 2013 NHL lockout, Kovalchuck returned to Russia to and signed a contract with SKA Saint Petersburg of the KHL, which not only allowed him to continue playing pro hockey but also allowed him to participate in KHL All Star Game as captain of Team West.
Apparently one of the featured events was a figure skating performance from the two captains of the game, and so both the 6'3", 230 lb. Kovalchuck and former Pittsburgh Penguin Aleksey Morozov showed off their more graceful sides in back-to-back routines that are just marvelously adorable.
So since we're smack dab in the middle of both hockey season and the giving holiday season, I figured I'd share the video of Kovalchuck skating his huge, Russian heart out. I hope it brightens your week until the holiday festivities arrive!
