Clint Dempsey Defies Odds, Achieves Impressive Athletic Feat While Not Being Lebron James
The U.S. Men's National Team put in a stellar performance in their quarterfinal game against Cuba in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The final score of 6-0 included a hat trick by the nationals team's 2nd all-time goal scorer Clint Dempsey, who now has six goals in the tournament so far. It's not often that a player or team achieves an impressive athletic feat for the USA without the help of Lebron James, but when it does occasionally happen it's hard to find it anywhere on ESPN. So Sports Grid is stepping up to bring you these non-Lebron James sports highlights.
Once again, despite none of the players on the roster being Lebron James, they managed to put on an dominant performance. Dempsey gave the USA an early 1-0 lead on a beautiful header that served as the catalyst for the momentum swing in the USA's favor for the entire first half. Dempsey positioned himself perfectly to receive the cross pass from Timothy Chandler and expertly redirected it into the net to give the U.S. an early 1-0 lead.
That guy who's not Lebron James is pretty good at sports, right?! If you like him, you should check out this next guy. Putting the USA up 2-0 was Gyasi Zardes, who gets the touch off another nice cross from Fabian Johnson.
Just like they drew it up, despite the obvious lack of any Lebron James presence on the field. Impressive.
Not to be outdone, Aron Johansson decided to get in on the action when he chipped a shot over the head of the goalkeeper at 32' to lift the USA lead to 3-0.
We know what you're thinking. Did Lebron James teach him how to do that? Actually, no! It was much more Carli Lloyd's style; who is not only not Lebron James, but is also a girl.
Next up was Omar Gonzalez, who came through on a scrappy play in which teammate Johansson saved it from going out of play and sent it into the middle for the strike.
Gonzalez's goal cemented a 4-0 lead for the U.S. heading into halftime, but Dempsey wasn't done dominating as the game's best non-Lebron James player. He sealed the deal on Cuba's embarrassment with two more goals.
The first was delivered at 64' on a penalty kick awarded to the U.S. when Johansson is taken down illegally in the penalty box.
It's almost as if him not being Lebron James doesn't affect his ability to be a world class athlete. Really impressive.
Dempsey completed his first ever national team hat trick on the final score of the game when he chased down the ball and chipped it mid-slide over the goalie with the outside of his foot.
With the rout, the United States moves onto the Gold Cup semi-finals at the Georgia Dome on Wednesday, July 22nd. As of now, Lebron James is still not on the roster for that match.
