HIGHLIGHT REEL: Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez Goes Full Superhuman
August 29 / Tanya Ray Fox / SportsGrid
Real Madrid played Real Betis in a La Liga match on Saturday, and apparently young Madrid star James Rodriguez ate his Wheaties before the game. Earlier in the day, Douglas Costa of Bayern Munich impressed with a perfectly executed rainbow, and it looked like that was going to be the soccer play of the day until James hit the pitch at Estadio Santiago Berbabeu in Madrid.
At 39' in the first half of the game, Rodruiguez lined up wide to take a free kick. He took the shot with his left foot, curving it perfectly to bounce off the weak side post and into the net.
Besides the fact that he absolutely nailed the placement of that shot, he also did it at what appeared to be 900 mph. It turns out that was the second most impressive thing he would do in the game, as THIS CRAZY ASS SHIT went down in the 50th minute of the game, just two minutes after Karim Benzema scored on a header to give Real Madrid a 3-0 lead.
That's absurd. That's the kind of thing that happens when you look around and realize you play for one of the best five teams in the world and your teammates are all superstars and you know you're going to win the game, so you just start screwing with the other team.
A bicycle kick, like Costa's rainbow, is very hard to do even if you are just standing around in your front yard. Bicycle kicks mid-game are for the truly elite stars of soccer. Bicycle kick goals? Well that's just special.
Even Rodriguez's third best play of the game would be SportsCenter Top 10 material on any normal day in sports. Here he is with an assist in just the second minute of the game, delivering a superb cross to Gareth Bale who scored on the header for a very early 1-0 lead.
