Little Portuguese Fan Consoles Crying French Fan Following Euro 16 Final
So shines a good deed in a weary world.
The human race was getting stomped last week, with people behaving badly with guns and other bad news everywhere you looked. But it wasn't a shutout, as evidenced in the video above. Every once and awhile, we get a win.
As you surely know, Portugal defeated France 1-0 in the European Championships final in Paris, causing great joy for the winners and crushing regret for the host country. So when this little boy, a Portugal fan, walked up to console this crying French fan, we feel that there's hope for the world after all.
We tend to take our pro sports seriously in the U.S., but in reality it's pretty much rooting for laundry, as Jerry Seinfeld once observed. You may be from New York, and you may have been a Mets fan all of your life. But I know some folks from NY who like the Orioles, and the Royals, and the Phillies. Loyalty to a city is nothing like loyalty to a nation.
To illustrate the difference, just look at the video above. If you cried when the Warriors lost to the Cavs this season, you're just pretty much a narcissist who puts too much emphasis on sports. But when this man broke into tears over France's loss, it was legit -- you can feel his pain. That's why you get a chill when your country is on the top step of the podium at the Olympics. Rooting for your country is different. It's real.
There are all manner of small-mined louts who are ready to kick an opposing fan when he's down. It takes a much bigger man to console a fan when he's at his lowest. And sometimes the biggest men come in small packages.
