The Dark Knight Sues: DC Comics Says Spanish Soccer Team Is Ripping Off Their Batman Logo
(In deep Michael Keaton voice): "I'm Batman. You know my attorneys, Mr. Crabb and Mr. McHugh ... "
On the left, one of the many, many Batman logos registered by DC Comics over the years (see more of them below). On the right, there's the new logo that Spanish soccer club Valencia has submitted for use next season. While I'm not saying that DC Comics is right in claiming trademark infringement, they do seem similar.
So DC Comics has filed a lawsuit with the European Union's trademark registration office to stop the team from using the logo. And when Batman serves those court documents, you'd better show up.
But before you think this is a slam-dunk for the Dark Knight, consider these facts:
* The bat has been a heraldic symbol in the Valencia region since Peter IV of Aragon in 1319 (that's his crown, below). Theoretically, Valencia could sue DC for stealing their logo.
* Batman has had so many freaking logos over the years that it's hard not to trip over one of these designs:
The one of the bottom right is their current one. But all are trademarked.
Here's Valencia's old logo. Seems safe, but a little dorky. Don't blame them for wanting to update it.
We say that unless Valencia proposes a new bat logo with the Superman logo imprinted in the middle of it, let them have this one.
