The Ryan Lochte Reaction On Twitter Is Breathtakingly Funny
August 18 / Tanya Ray Fox / SportsGrid
The internet just discovered that Ryan Lochte - one of the most famous American Olympians of the last twelve years - lied about an armed robbery in Rio to cover up the fact that he and his friends vandalized a gas station with their urine. So you'll have no trouble believing that Twitter is an absolute gold mine right now.
There is just so material. There's the completely unnecessary and possibly criminal lie, the drunk and disorderly peeing, Lochte's covert escape back to America, the detainment of the swimmers at the airport and the fact that a freaking Billy Bush exclusive interview turned out to be a complete fabrication. Who'd have guessed?!
LochteGate, or the LochMess as it's also been dubbed, is to the internet what Donald Trump is to late night; a treasure trove of endless material. It also helps that Lochte wasn't exactly beloved to begin with. His list of pros as a celebrity begins and ends with the fact that he's an incredible athlete. Outside of that he has nothing to offer. Listening to him speak is mind-numbing. Even if you can manage to focus long enough to hear what he's saying, you'll generally find yourself feeling dumber for it.
So with all of that ammunition, this is a viral story that is practically tailor-made for Twitter. It offers up multiple angles, it contains a variety of mock-worthy details and the truth at the root of the entire saga is almost stranger than the fiction. Like I said: pure gold.
