Player Tells Australian Open Crowd, Interviewer, That She’s ‘Good From Behind’
Because, live TV.
If there's anything more nerve-wracking to a young athlete than a TV interview, it's a live TV interview in front of a large crowd that's being broadcast over the public address system. That's where 21-year-old Daria Gavrilova found herself after her 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 third-round victory over 28th-seeded Kristina Mladenovic today at the Australian Open.
Gavrilova, originally from Russia, has been living in Australia for the past three years and is considered a hometown hero at the Aussie Open.
In the interview she was asked about staging her comeback in the third set, and her response delighted the crowd, to say the least.
Just as in the match, Gavrilova recovered to end the interview with at least some dignity.
