You Know How Annoying Grunting Is In Tennis? Well Now It’s Costing Players Points
It's tough to watch a tennis match and not be entirely distracted by the grunting. In both women's and men's tennis, certain players will just let out a grunt every damn time they hit the ball. It gets to the point where it's annoying, kind of awkward and most definitely hilarious. Despite all of this, grunts have become ultimately commonplace in the game and you kind of just go with it. Well Robin Haase wasn't okay with that.
Haase was facing off against Gonzalo Lama in an ATP Challenger Tour match. Lama, in the near court in the video, lets out a massive grunt after every hit of the ball. Haase, who had been pretty silent throughout the point, lets out an exaggerated grunt toward the end of the rally. The exaggerated grunt didn't sit well with the chair umpire, who took the sound as pretty terrible sportsmanship toward Lama. The chair ump was so offended he actually awarded the point to Lama and enraged Haase in the process. Naturally, Haase became enraged and went over to the chair umpire and lost his mind.
Unfortunately for Haase, he couldn't turn that aggression into a victory. He was defeated by Lama 6-3 6-3 in the first round of the tournament.
