Germany Debuts Tongue-In-Cheek Rainbow Uniforms At Sochi Opening Ceremonies

A lot has been made of the German Olympic team’s choice of garb going into the 2014 Winter Olympics, namely, the perceived protest to Russia’s stringent anti-gay laws. Germany, of course, has denied these rumors — though everyone seems to not care, because they’re being hailed as a statement of tolerance (or a middle finger to the policies of Vladimir Putin). No matter how you slice it, they’re a bold choice of clothing.

And the historical irony couldn’t be more obvious: 73 years ago, Germany invaded Russia as the harbingers of evil. Today they arrive in a courageous showing of acceptance. Weird how things sometimes work out like that…
