Rory McIlroy Says Playing Golf With President Trump Not ‘A Political Statement’
Apparently, hitting a little white ball around with the President of the United States has become a political statement.
It's not exactly top secret information that some of the American public have been extremely critical of President Donald Trump and his administration during their first month in office.
That criticism has now extended to the world of golf. The current No. 2 golfer in the world Rory McIlroy recently accepted an invitation to play a round with President Trump and has faced intense backlash for the game.
Actions have consequences. He considered this and, knowing climate, normalised a fascist. Now wants us to pretend didn't happen. Sorry baby. https://t.co/YafSlP9Zhz

Then there was this jab at Trump's immigration policy:

McIlroy responded to the nasty remarks in in a tweet citing his reasoning for accepting the president's invitation. He said, the round "wasn't an endorsement nor a political statement of any kind."

While it seems many anti-Trump supporters were out to get McIlroy, one of the golfer's contemporaries Ian Poulter, who also played golf with Trump recently, supported the Irishman.
Rory, very well said. I played at Trumps new course in Dubai a couple of weeks ago and received abuse. It's a game of golf. See you soon ??https://t.co/CXZrO9WRR1

Given the current divisive political climate in the United States, the harsh condemnation of McIlroy doesn't come as a surprise.
But while President Trump is certainly not the most popular world leader at the moment, the attacks on McIlroy are overwhelmingly unwarranted, especially considering they're over a round of golf.
Drown out the noise Rory, and just play your game!
