C-O-N-C-E-N-T-R-A-T-I-O-N, Concentration. One of the many aspects that makes up the characters of these brilliant, young minds. HBO's critically acclaimed series, "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel" returns tomorrow, with a special inside look at the minds of our future generations. "Real Sports" Correspondent Soledad O'Brien had the chance to speak with some of the competitors in this year's national competition. The 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee presents the opportunity for young geniuses to prove to the whole world, that age is but a number, and they prefer letters.
O'Brien meet with young contestants Jem Birch and Cooper Komatsu, both partners, who won the North American School Scrabble Championship. They discuss interests, as well as what goes into preparing for these intense battles of wording patterns. O'Brien even sat down with 6 year old, Akash Vukoti, whose adorable smile takes a back seat to his unbelievable intellect.
With the show returning tomorrow at 10 p.m., it's nice to see the these kids get as much time in the spotlight as they deserve. In light of the NBA/NHL playoffs coming to a close, a segment about youthful minds and their own version of a "Super Bowl moment" is wonderful. As we all patiently wait for the show's return, let us take a moment to appreciate these kids and consider the fact that they are all incredibly talented. At age 7 they knew how to spell Onomatopoeia, while most of us were learning how to ride a bike.
