No Irish club had ever made the group stage of a European competition until Dublin's Shamrock Rovers earned a ticket with the help of Pat Sullivan and a U.S.-educated goalkeeper.
The Rovers won a tough road match in Serbia against Partizan Belgrade when Sullivan's volley equalized and a Stephen O'Donnell PK in extra time sealed the 2-1 victory.
New Rovers goalkeeper Ryan Thompson -- a Jamaican who competed in college soccer at the University of Tampa -- had his only mistake go uncapitalized-upon and earned victory in his most visible career match.
