A Visibily Shaken Serena Apologizes On TV For The Whole Sharapova Rolling Stone Article (VIDEO)
After coming under flak for suggesting that the Steubenville rape victim shouldn't have put herself in the position to get blackout drunk and raped in the first place, Serena apologized to the family and the girl. Couldn't have been easy, and we all know that Serena wasn't trying to explicity blame the victim -- more just give the advice a mother would give to her daughter along the lines of, "Hey, be careful, shit happens."Now Serena's had to apologize for vaguely/subtly/admittedly/sort of/maybe/definitely talking smack about Maria Sharapova being a dork, of sorts. (Sharapova also commented on the Steubenville situation, saying "I was definitely sad to hear what she had to say about the whole case.")Ugh. Here's how this one played out so we can put it to rest and focus on Wimbledon.Serena's apology Part 1: "I made it a point to reach out to Maria, because she was inadvertently brought into the situation by assumptions made by the reporter."Ok, we get it. Reporters want stories and, if you hint at something, no matter how vague, they'll run with it. I'm no expert on deciphering tennis bullshit, but Sharapova seemed to know damn well who you were talking about when you said, "There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest …She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky’ – it’s so boring…She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.”But you're deflecting a bit. That's cool. It might have some other context that we don't know about. We'll accept that for the purpose of putting this stupid drama behind us.Part 2: "With that being said, I've been in the business for a little over 200 years, so I should definitely, definitely know better."So you accept that you made a mistake. That's a key part of an apology. Admitting you were wrong isn't easy. It's just that, you had JUST SAID you were taken out of context, or whatever, so which is it. Were you being a dick? Was Rolling Stone taking liberties? Or are you saying you were both being a dick, and Rolling Stone was taking liberties? Did you say something we aren't aware of?Apologizing sucks, but come on. Just. Say. Sorry.Part 3: "I take full responsibility."There it is. Not easy to do.Part 4: "I personally talked to Maria at the player party, incidentally. I said, look, I want to personally apologize to you if you are offended by being brought into my situation. I want to take this moment to just pour myself, be open, say I'm very sorry for this whole situation. I'm the first person to reach out to individuals and people if I feel that something may have hurt them or something may have been misconstrued."Nice. Beef over. Let's play tennis.
